Top 8 Study Skills to Develop

  • Studying effectively is important for your success in school.

  • You should always write down your assignments so you can keep track of what you need to study.  Use your agenda, an electronic organizer or other method you are comfortable with.

  • Take study notes and outline information during class.

  • When studying, it is best to find an atmosphere that helps you concentrate without being distracted.

  • Pay attention in class.

  • Establish a daily study routine, including picking a place and a time to study.

  • Prioritize your study time and complete your homework first.

  • Participate in class discussions and ask questions when you are unclear of a concept.

SURVEY

  • Take a brief look at titles, headings, and subheadings for quick information.

  • Look at pictures, charts, graphs and maps as other sources of information

 

QUESTION

  • Turn the title, headings, and/or subheadings into questions to focus studying.

  • Ask who, what, when, where, why, and how questions about the information you have gatherred.

READ

  • Pay attention to underlined, italicized, and bold-printed words or phrases.

  • Stop and reread unclear or confusing paragraphs.

  • Make notes, then underline words, phrases, or sentences that relate to your questions.

RECITE

  • Answer your questions based on what you have read.

  • Recite questions and answers in your own words.

REVIEW

  • Review what you have read.

  • Summarize and recall important details and information.

 

GENERAL TESTING TIPS

 

 

  • The night before the test get a good night's sleep.

  • The morning of the test eat a balanced breakfast.

  • When taking a test it is important to relax and try your best.

  • When there are directions on a test, you should read and follow them carefully.

  • When choosing an answer on a multiple choice question, you should read the question and the answer choices, then choose the best answer.

  • To make sure you have enough time to answer all of the questions, you should skip hard questions and come back to them later - just don't forget to come back!

  • If you do not know the answer to a question, you should eliminate the "bad" choices, then guess from the remaining choices.

  • When you finish a test, you should review the test and check your answers.
